Our speaker at last week's regular meeting was Pam Hunsaker from Dolly Parton's Imagination Library. If you weren't there and haven't had a chance to look at the materials about the program, I encourage you to do so, but basically, the Library sends free books to registered children each month until they turn 5. Our Club and any partners that we find to support our endeavor will pay for the cost of shipping the books to the kids' homes. I don't think there's any arguing with the power of providing children and their families with the gift of reading and the set of lifelong skills that reading supports. Our Happy Dollars portion of the meeting, which took place after the program, was filled with stories about members' experiences with books and reading, both their own and their children's. It was very heartwarming, and seemed to be a project that all present members could get behind. I'm excited to move forward on this!

In other club news, we were awarded $1000 for our membership grant application from the District 6250 Membership Committee. We have a three-pronged approach, which includes creating a video highlighting the good work that the group does, creating a volunteer portal for the community to find out more about volunteer opportunities available around the area and partnering with an organization to host a volunteer fair where we can speak more about who we are. The Membership Committee will be meeting soon to create next steps for this! Like this on the District 6250 Facebook page if you can. There is a great picture of some of our club members!

Finally, please mark your calendars for Thursday, March 4th from 5:30-7:30! We will be joined by past District Governors Dean Ryerson and Bill Hoel to help us in creating a strategic plan for our club. You can feel free to eat and drink, and they assure us that it is a fun process! We will not be having a regular club meeting on Friday, March 5th.

Also, Tom Danielson left a Rotary album at Joe Hammell's during the last get-together there. If someone picked it up, could you let Tom know? smiley

Exploring the Black Experience in Rotary

Register now for, Exploring the Black Experience in Rotary on Thursday, 25 February at 15:00 Chicago time (UTC-5), and submit your questions to our experts. A recording of the session will be available to everyone who registers.

Through hearing stories of Black Rotarians around the word, we will:

  • Open ourselves to talking about race and identity.
  • Become aware and acknowledge how our own social identities impact the club and community experience.
  • Allow space for all Rotarians to bring their full, most authentic selves to our organization.
